Klaus Küster about the works of Thomas Friedrich

Our understanding of images and their origins is not exactly facilitated by small images typical of the Internet. For this reason, Thomas Friedrich has grouped them here according to technical-medial designations and provided size information. Since he does without a title, there are no further semantic keys to the images here. Enigmatic pictures „burn“ longer; I agree with the artist on that. So, for the time being, we are left with an unbiased and free view of his pictures. Nevertheless, I hope to contribute to the understanding of his intentions and practices with my brief consideration of some aspects.

His many years of experience as a photographer support the draughtsman and painter in his spatial handling of light and dark, light and shadow. His rich photographic oeuvre includes images whose details he sometimes uses as sketches for drawing and painting. With the typical organisation of hand-controlled spiral-shaped calligraphic loops in geometrically determined painterly ensembles, he creates unparalleled figures whose dynamics also determine a significant spatial pictorial event as a plot.

We are looking forward to a closer direct observation in the studio and in future „real“ exhibitions, about which Thomas Friedrich will be happy to inform you here.
